"Hello! I’m Helen, a retired nurse, calling Southeast Asia home since 2012. While my career was dedicated to caring for others, my personal life is currently dedicated to my two most loyal companions: my cats, Theary and Tilly. Plus, Gerry, I TNR stray cats in my neighbourhood, and Gerry keeps coming back, so he is now my #3cat, and he is adorable.

If you want to know the lengths I’ll go to for those I love, look no further than my move from Laos to Cambodia. When faced with a border X-ray machine and a lack of official pet-transit infrastructure, I had to get creative. With the help of a quick-thinking minibus driver who distracted the immigration officers, Tilly was slid safely under the X-ray belt while Poppy hitched a ride past the guards hidden inside my backpack.

It wasn’t exactly the 'standard' way to cross an international border, but it certainly makes for a great dinner story! Today, we are all happily settled in Cambodia, enjoying a much quieter life—though I’ll always keep my 'cat smuggling' skills in my back pocket, just in case."
