About this house sitting position in Freshwater

Our home is an old traditional Queenslander which has been modernised while keeping its original features. Freshwater and adjoining Stratford both have a post office and a variety of eateries and convenience stores. Stratford also has a butchery and a public library with wifi availability. Freshwater Station is the main boarding point for the popular Kuranda Scenic Railway which runs from Cairns to Kuranda. There is a hotel/pub in Stratford and another in Redlynch, just the other side of Freshwater.

The nearest shopping centre is in Redlynch which is accessible by public bus; there is a regular bus service from Redlynch to Cairns with a nearby bus stop in each direction. A cycle path runs parallel to the main road from Redlynch through Freshwater & Stratford with access to the Botanical Gardens, walking trails and the Cairns Esplanade and Lagoon. The path also links with Freshwater Creek and the popular Crystal Cascades.

The house has four bedrooms (one used as a study), two bathrooms, (one upstairs and one downstairs), a large living room, open plan dining room and kitchen. The floors upstairs are polished apart from the carpeted study and tiled kitchen. There is a queen size bed upstairs and also downstairs with two single beds in the smaller downstairs bedroom. There is also a small lounge downstairs leading through to the laundry and a workshop/storage room. The laundry has a lockable door opening to the lower lawn.

The house is built on a slope so half of the house is on ground level and the other is two storey with a verandah overlooking the garden.

The garden is large with three lawns; the grass will be cut prior to our departure, (weather permitting) so mowing will not be needed during our time away. Access to the house is usually via the carport but there is a front drive (grass) for dry weather vehicle access up a relatively steep slope (in reverse 4WD as no turning space at the top). There is sufficient room for a caravan to be parked (at an angle so for storage only).

The fenced, tiled pool is saltwater and deep and is located near the patio which has an outside dining area and barbecue. The pool requires the skimmer box to be checked regularly and emptied of leaves. A water sample will have been taken to a local pool shop for testing prior to our departure.

“We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to sit for Malcolm & Mo while they travelled Australia for three months. We had a truly wonderful stay and it really opened our eyes to life in Cairns. Their lovely home was very comfortable and we especially enjoyed spending time in their outdoor living area, garden and pool. Our stay was during the summer months and we found the whole experience pleasant and rewarding. Great neighbours, great location and a great time. Malcolm and Mo made us feel at home, they were easy to communicate with start to finish and it’s been a pleasure getting to know them throughout our stay. We were sad to move on and would happily sit here or recommend. Thanks again for everything… Tony & Cassandra”

“It was an absolute pleasure to house sit for Malcolm and Mo. Their spacious home and garden ( and amazing saltwater pool) were easy to look after and maintain. Communication between us all was excellent with regard to instructions and what they required of us. It was a privilege to look after their home and we are very happy that they found it clean and welcoming for their return. We would recommend this sit to anyone who is interested and we would absolutely house sit again in this relaxing space if the opportunity arose. Thank you Malcolm and Mo!”

“We were lucky enough to get a two & a half month housesit at Malcolm’s place in Freshwater and it was perfect. The old house is a charming quirky Queenslander overlooking cane fields. It has extensive tiered gardens with easy to look after tropical plants and a good sprinkler system to help keep it going in the hot weather that has arrived in Cairns. There is also a lovely pool to cool off in and a spacious covered area where we ate most meals outside as there was always a breeze. Having air conditioning through out the house was a bonus too. Malcolm & his wife were easy to communicate with and left extensive notes to cover the house sit and answered any questions we had promptly. We felt comfortable with them straight away and look forward to seeing them more. ”
