We are a clean and respectful little family that loves nature and takes pride in leaving a home in better shape than when we arrived.

We've been lucky to explore many amazing places around the world (met while living/working in Nepal), and have enjoyed Couch Surfing and Airbnb as a way to meet interesting people and immerse in local cultures (both as hosts and as guests). We now have two little humans in our family and have embarked on an open ended adventure!

House/farm sitting experience:

We have house sat and farm sat for creatures big and small, and look forward to hearing about your family members with feathers, fur and fins. 😀

While some children might not know how to act around animals, ours have stayed on many farms and spend a lot of time in homes with cats and dogs. We make sure they're well versed in how to greet an animal. They are both quiet observers of the world and have shown a fairly mature awareness of their surroundings, being suprisingly good at reading the demeanor of people and animals. They also thrive on the responsibility of helping care for animals 😊

We are used to what comes with living amongst animals and with rural life (fences, bodies of water, other hazards etc), and are comfortable and confident raising our children in these environments.

More about us:

Gemma is fascinated by understanding how things work, is a life long DIY enthusiast who enjoys fixing and building things, and has a love for all creatures great and small. She grew up on a property in rural NSW, so is used to dealing with everything from fences to rainwater tanks for drinking etc, can turn her hand to almost anything and isn't afraid to get dirty with hard work when the need arises.

Jane loves cooking both to eat delicious foods and to share them with others, values family time with her own relatives and also other families she has the pleasure of spending time with, enjoys being active and will give most sports a go. She is pretty happy to see where life takes her and enjoys taking the time to understand every day life in the places she visits.

After spending the first year of our relationship travelling, couchsurfing, and hitchhiking in remote areas of the planet, we called Melbourne home for a decade or so, enjoying a lovely little neighbourhood in the inner west with a great sense of community as we built our professional careers and our family. We took on a house with potential and painstakingly renovated every millimetre of the property (inside and out) to create our beloved 'efficient electric home' and bush tucker + vegetable gardens.

We were overjoyed to welcome Makena, who has grown into a brave, kind, well mannered (and well spoken) 3 year old. Kamani also joined us and is growing into her own personality as an active 1 year old. They both love to explore and learn, with special interests in books, puzzles, nature (particularly Australian native flora and fauna), physical activity, and cooking.

We raise our children without 'childproofing' the world around them and are comfortable holding the boundaries of what is and isn't allowed to be touched. We have found this works well and they are very well behaved in unfamiliar and familiar environments. However we still make sure not to leave our little ones unsupervised at any time.

Although on our travels we love a good museum and appreciate thoughtful architecture, we particularly enjoy spending time in nature as a family. We like to learn the names and habits of flora and fauna, particularly Australian natives. We love to camp, hike, and swim, and thrive in places where the sounds of nature are the loudest and the stars shine the brightest. We take pride in keeping a tidy house and aim to leave homes tidy and looking as good as or better than when we arrived.

It was a bittersweet farewell to our home and community, but in 2025 we took the brave leap of selling most of our worldly possessions and hitting the road with our 4WD, our camping gear and each other. We've embraced the freedom and adventures so far!

We have done quite a bit of house sitting along the way (across different websites and Fbook groups) to get a feel for different environments and homes. This has helped us work out what we want our lives to look like on the other side of what our toddler is calling our 'big adventure'.

We've been lucky to find a rental to call home in Kingscliff, NSW, with a current goal of basing ourselves in the Northern Rivers long term. We hope to keep house sitting as a way to show our kids different lifestyles and animals to care for, and are open to ongoing housesitting relationships in this part of Australia. Read more...
