About this house sitting position in Toogoolawah
Escape to the country!
Hi, we are Tony & Jeanette.
Our home is nestled in a cradle of the upper Brisbane River close to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, Somerset Dam and Wivenhoe Dam, called Gregors Creek.
There are a large variety of native birds in our area and we enjoy spotting them from the front porch early in the mornings. You can see two our of dams from the front porch as well as a lot of the paddocks so its a beautiful spot to start the day with a cuppa. We do have a coffee machine as well :).
Our Roxy puppy loves the idea of the pool, as long as she doesn't have to get in it. She prefers wadding in the dams were her feet are always touching the bottom. We walk her around the paddocks twice a day and play ball with her in the mornings while we're having a cuppa. She is a 3yr old Australian stumpy tail cattle dog and a bundle of energy! She's an outside dog with a mat just inside the door that she is alound to sit on if we let her inside for a short while. She has her kennel for sleeping. Right now she has 10 puppies, but we’re hoping all but 1 have new homes by March. We’re planning on keeping on of the boys so now there will be a puppy as well as Roxy.
Our cats, Silver (the fluffy one) and Tonto (the tabby) are brothers and love to be around us. They usually sleep on the bed with us and love being in the same room. They don't like being picked up, but will sit on our laps if we sit still long enough and love cuddles when they come in from being outside. They are also content to be towel dried if they come in wet :).
There are 3 cows, a calf and a bull who we try and rotate through the paddocks every other day, usually by opening a gate and waiting for them to wander through. Sometimes they wander back into the paddock we want to move them from, but they eventually progress. Their water troughs need checking when we move them into a new paddock.
There are 5 sheep, 3 lambs and a ram in the olive grove. Apart from counting them every time we go past and making sure their water is full, we don't do much else with them. There job is to keep the grass down and fertilise the olive grove.
Then there are the chickens! We have 50+ chickens and roosters around the place. There is a chook shed and nesting boxes next to the greenhouse and the majority are down there. Sometimes we shut them in at night, sometimes we don't. They create a racket when the crows come and steal eggs. There is a small flock up in the back paddock. They just need seed daily, and check their water. We get between 10 -20 eggs a day from the chook pen and haven't found a good outlet for selling them yet, so we hope you like eggs! The chooks get seed every day and scraps from the kitchen whenever. When the eggs are collected, Tony washes them, boxes them and put them in the cold room. He has a system to identify which are oldest. Anything over 2 weeks we usually boil and feed back to the chooks.
We also have 2 bee hives in the back paddock and they shouldn't need any attention while we are away.
The house is large and comfortable. There is a ducted air system for heat and cold. You might want to cool the house late in the day for a comfortable night sleep if it’s hot.
If you like gardening, we won't object. :) There are rose beds and a green house all of which seem to need weeding all of the time! There are citrus trees and the lemon never seems to stop producing. The grape vines should be finished for the season and not need anything.
This is a beautiful place to live and very relaxing. The neighbours are lovely too.
We know some locals fish in the Brisbane River from near the bridge which is 1km up the road. We've also seen some kayakers on the river. The Brisbane Rail Trail is popular with walkers and cyclists and there are boating and fishing opportunities on the Somerset Dam and Wivenhoe Dams.
If you fancy going out for a meal, the Linville pub is only 15 min down the road and has the best food in the area. There are IGAs in Toogoolawah (10min) and Kilcoy (15min). The nearest Woolworths is at Woodford (30min).
We hope you'll enjoy our place as much as we do! Read more...
