Prepping Your Home for a Pet Sitter!

Pet Sitting

Leaving your home and pets in the care of someone else can feel like a big step, but with the right preparation, it can also be a stress-free and rewarding experience. Whether you’re heading away for a weekend or planning a longer trip, taking time to prepare your home properly will ensure a smoother stay for your sitter — and peace of mind for you.

Here are some key things to consider before your sitter arrives.

Set Expectations Early

Before confirming your sitter, take the time to discuss each other’s expectations. Every home and pet is different, so it’s important to be clear about your routines, requirements, and any other information your sitter should know about.

A useful tool for this is the Mindahome Sample House Sitting Agreement form which you can download free when you log into your Mindahome.com.au account and go to the “How To” Tab then scroll down to “Download an example House Sitting Agreement.” This optional but highly recommended document is designed to help both homeowners and sitters agree on responsibilities and terms in writing. It’s perfect for outlining pet care routines, household tasks, special requirements, and helps prevent any misunderstandings down the track.

Create a Comfortable Living Space

Make sure areas like the living area, kitchen, bathroom and laundry are clean and tidy and don’t forget to leave some space in the fridge and pantry for your sitter to use. Prepare the bedroom your sitter will be sleeping in. Some sitters bring their own linen, otherwise, fresh linen makes it a welcoming coming space. Also leave some wardrobe and drawer space for your sitter’s clothes.

Write a Simple House Guide

A written guide is one of the most helpful things you can leave for your sitter. It doesn’t have to be fancy — a few printed pages or a handwritten notebook is fine. Include:

  • Pet routines (feeding, walking, medications).
  • Instructions for appliances (heating/cooling, washing machine, oven).
  • Wi-Fi details.
  • Bin collection days.
  • Watering instructions for plants or gardens.
  • Any ongoing services (cleaners, pool care, deliveries).
  • Don’t forget to include your contact information while you are away. Also, your local emergency contact person, your preferred vet, a neighbour or friend.

Stock Up on Supplies

Before you leave, make sure there’s enough supplies for your pets for the entire time you’re away. This includes food, treats, litter, cleaning products, and any required medications. If it is a lengthy stay, you may prefer to discuss replenishing pet supplies with your sitter before you leave. It’s also thoughtful to ensure the sitter has access to household basics like toilet paper, soap, and cleaning supplies.

Check Safety and Security

Go through your home and make sure everything is in good working order. Test smoke alarms, check doors and windows, and leave instructions for any alarm systems or security cameras in use. If your sitter needs to be aware of any tricky locks or switches, now is the time to explain.

Let a trusted neighbour know someone will be staying in your home and provide their contact details to your sitter in case of emergency.

Final Touches

A little extra thought can go a long way. Leave a welcome note with helpful tips about your local area — such as the nearest supermarket, vet, walking tracks or places of interest. You might also want to let your sitter know about any quirks of your pets or household routines that could be missed in a list.

If your sitter is arriving after you’ve left, leave a key in a secure location and let them know how to access it.

A little time spent now preparing your home can help ensure your pets are happy, your sitter is comfortable, and you can truly relax while you’re away.
