October is Mental Health Month, and while we often focus on ourselves, it’s also the perfect time to think about the pets who share our homes and hearts. Our companions bring comfort, joy, and laughter, but they rely on us too. Just as they support our wellbeing, it’s our role to nurture theirs.
Spotting Stress Signals in Pets
Pets can’t tell us when they’re anxious, but they do show it through changes in behaviour.
• Eating: sudden loss or increase in appetite.
• Sleeping: restless, unable to settle, or unusually lethargic.
• Energy: less enthusiasm for walks or play.
• Bathroom habits: accidents or changes in frequency.
• Hiding or destructive behaviour: withdrawing more often, or chewing unusual things.
If these changes persist, it could be a sign your pet needs extra comfort, a safe space, or a check-up with the vet.
Routine, Enrichment, and Exercise
Predictability helps pets feel secure. A consistent routine for feeding, walks, and bedtime anchors their day and reduces stress.
But happy pets need more than routine — they also need stimulation. Try:

* Puzzle feeders to make mealtimes engaging.
* Scent games or hide-and-seek with treats.
* Short training sessions to keep their minds active.
* For cats, toy rotation or feather wands for “prey play.”
And of course, daily physical exercise burns energy and strengthens body and mind — whether it’s a walk for a dog, a play session for a cat, or a new chew toy for a rabbit
Creating a Safe Haven at Home
Every pet needs a place to retreat and recharge. This could be a cosy crate with a blanket, a cat tree or perch, a favourite corner, or a secure tunnel for smaller pets. What matters is that it feels safe.
Respect these spaces as “do not disturb” zones so pets know they can rest without interruption.
Connection is just as important as comfort. A quiet cuddle, a belly rub, or simply talking to your pet reassures them that they’re loved and understood. By protecting both their physical space and their emotional needs, we give them the foundation for a truly happy mind.
