Pet-friendly Easter Ideas
Hoppy Easter to you and your furry friends! As the season of fresh blooms, colourful eggs, and sweet treats rolls around, it’s a perfect time to celebrate with your pet by your side. Whether you’re planning an Easter egg hunt or simply enjoying a chocolate-free cuppa with a hot cross bun, it’s important to remember that some traditional Easter festivities can pose risks to our four-legged companions. With a few simple adjustments, you can create a fun, festive, and safe Easter experience for the whole family—including the fur kids.
Easter hazards (and how to avoid them)
- Chocolate: It’s a well-known fact that chocolate is toxic for both cats and dogs. While it might be the star of the Easter basket, keep chocolate treats out of reach of pets. Instead, investigate pet friendly Easter treats that you can make at home.
- Plastic basket grass: The colourful, stringy grass is a great base for Easter baskets but also very tempting for our pet pals to chew on. If swallowed, these products can cause serious illness in pets which could require emergency surgery. Choose pet-safe paper grass or fabric as an alternative.
- Hot-cross buns: A beloved Easter tradition, but unfortunately sultanas and raisins are toxic to pets. Avoid sharing these treats with your pet and instead look for pet-safe versions made without harmful ingredients.
- Easter egg hunt: A classic Easter activity for kids and adults alike! But leftover eggs—especially those made of chocolate, plastic, or dyed materials—can be dangerous if found and eaten by pets. Always keep track of where eggs are hidden and ensure they’re all collected at the end of the hunt. Try to avoid placing them in spots easily accessible to curious pets.
- Pet gifting: Rabbits might be among the most huggable pets, but they aren’t necessarily suited for first-time pet owners. Speak with those who you think might benefit from becoming a pet parent and avoid gifting a pet this Easter.
Ideas for a fun and safe Easter with your pet
- Pet-friendly Easter hunt: With natural hunting instincts our animal companions would love to join in the hunting fun! Use your pet’s favourite treat dispensing toy to create a hunt that’s suitable for them and also provides wonderful mental stimulation.
- Easter photo shoot: Enjoy some frivolous fun with your pet pal by organising an Easter photo shoot together. It’s doesn’t have to be with a professional photographer (unless you want it to be!). Simply get a friend to help or grab a selfie-stick to capture the candid and hilarious moments that make Easter special for you and your fur kid.
- Get into the outdoors: The Easter break provides an extra long weekend, so why not take the time to enjoy the outdoors at a pet-friendly beach, hiking trail or the local dog park.
The Mindahome team wish you all a safe, fun-filled, and tail-wagging Easter!
