With an estimated 30.4 million pets delivering a dose of love, loyalty and companionship in households right across the country, it’s no wonder that Australia is known as an animal-loving nation.
National Pet Day in Australia is celebrated on April 11, and it’s a time to recognise the role pets play in our lives each and every day. Research on the benefits of pet ownership tells a clear story of ways in which our pet pals can help boost our moods, improve our health, and truly become a member of the family.
During the COVID-era, many Aussies found solace in their pets, with 70% revealing that being a pet owner improved their lives. Pet power is strong, particularly for dog owners, with 96% believing that their canine companion can mend a broken heart and sense when they are not feeling their best.
As a nation with more pets than people, it seems only right to take some time to reflect on our bond with pets. From spending quality time with your pet pal to taking some time out to care for fur friends that need our help, this National Pet Day, take some time to share the pet love.
- Adopt a rescue
There are animal shelters across the nation such as Pet Rescue and RSPCA, as well as state-based organisations such as Animal Welfare League NSW that are looking for pet parents to partner with very deserving animals. 44% of Australians say they own a rescue pet and for cat owners companionship and rescue were the top reasons for welcoming a feline friend into their household.
- Volunteer at a rescue shelter
If you’re not quite ready for pet adoption just yet, investigate opportunities to step in as a volunteer at a shelter or other pet organisation. RSPCA is always on the lookout for volunteers and various state-based organisations would greatly appreciate a helping hand. Volunteering not only allows you to give something back, it also gives you the opportunity to interact with many types, breeds and sizes of animals to see if your fur-ever friend may be among them.
- Make time for your fur-kid
Spending quality time with your pet pal will strengthen your bond. A study of pet owners revealed an overwhelming consensus that the overall benefits of pet ownership includes companionship, comfort, positive mental and physical health and unconditional love, so spending more time together will only make your day better! Head to your local dog park – we’ve listed some favourites in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. There are also many pet-friendly restaurants, cafes and eateries that may be good for a stopover during your daily walk.
- Spoil your special pet pal with a homemade or store-bought treat
It’s no surprise that around 10% of pet owners cook for their pets, and dog owners are the ones most likely to whip up a canine culinary creation. Consider making a pet-friendly treat, or head to your nearest pet bakery or pet food retailer and choose one of the many ready-made treats to spoil your fur kid.
- Engage their favourite pet sitter the next time you have to travel
Pets become familiar with the smells, sounds and spaces around their home, so it makes sense to allow them to stay where they feel most comfortable, especially when a pet parent has to travel. Engaging a live-in pet sitter allows your pet to remain in their own home environment, with a pet sitter to step into the role of pet parent for a time and provide the love and attention they need and deserve. There are a range of house and pet sitter profiles online to browse to find the right one to suit your pet care requirements.
